About Mekonta

Mekonta is the portfolio site for freelance designer John Cowen, based in Exeter in South West England. I design for print and web sites - attractive, functional and accessible web sites are particular favourites.

I have a background in Fine Art & Graphic Design and have more recently been working as Content Manager for large eCommerce companies. With this experience I am able to develop web sites that are attractive with a strong, identifiable, brand but also accessible and meet commercial requirements presentation and visibility.

I don’t work to standard templates and will design a bespoke solution for each project. This means the finished web site is perfectly optimised for you, without compromise or unnesessary elements.

Several clients have required web sites that they can update themselves, without any specialst knowledge. This ability should never need to affect the web site’s design - with simple, semantic and clearly labelled code, the web site content can be easily updated by people with no web site building experience. You can even have a web site built around Expression Engine. An extremely powerful content managment system that allows you to update content to your website with absolute ease. You never need look at the XHTML code, you can upload new content to your web site from a simple on-line interface.

But between being frustrated with branding restrictions imposed on me by an organisation, at work today, and flicking through a magazine at home – I had an interesting thought process about what makes really exceptional company branding.
