The Obligatory Blog

SEO in progress

March 31, 2010

I'm of the firm belief that most SEO is common sense. Don't think about tricking the search engines and playing the game. You'll never win. At least not in the long term. The algorithms change and what nudged you a few results higher one month will see you penalised the next.

Search Engines are interested in finding the content that their users are looking for. So rather than think about how to trick a search engine into displaying your website first for any particular search - you should instead be thinking what would a customer want from a site like mine? And then filling your site with such content.

However :-) ... There are also times when it is appropriate to resort to the odd SEO trick. When it is relevant (or at least, not irrelevant) to the user, not obtrusive or dishonest - but will enable you to get in some valuable extra keywords to your web pages.

I've started using such a trick on these blog posts. I decided it was not wholly inappropriate to state at the bottom of every post who the blog was posted by (John Cowen) - what Mekonta does (web design) and where I'm based (Exeter). But at the same time, I wasn't totally happy about having the same sign off beneath every single post.

My solution (for the time being anyway) - is to have written 6 different sign offs and to be able to select whichever one I want every time I post a blog entry.

My hunch is also that the variance between sign off texts will give me better SEO than the same text constantly repeating.
