The internet has supposedly facilitated individuals and companies from around the world working together remotely. And it's true you don’t need to ever physically meet a client or another developer on a project.
However, wherever you're based you’ll find all the local web design companies competing on web design keywords including that location. So for me, based in Exeter – I'd be optimising my website for Web Design Exeter, Web Designer in Devon, and so on. So while it’s very possible to do business internationally – in reality most people are still looking to work with more local companies.
Most of the web design I do through Mekonta is from word-of-mouth, so I have never focused very heavily on optimising the website on any particular keywords. Certainly if you Google Web design Exeter I'm not up on the list.
And I've been pretty content with this. But over the last few months I've been pulled more and more into not just being environmentally aware, but environmentally active. As a result I would like to be able to do more web design work for ethical and ecologically minded companies. They don’t need to be in Exeter, but realistically, I think I have a much more likely chance of working with clients in the Exeter area than clients beyond this area.
So my goal is not so much to compete with the local web design companies who are appearing in search results for Web design exeter, but to get top rankings in results for ethical, green, ecological, organic(?!) web design in Exeter.
I doubt there will be much competition and perhaps even fewer searches on such terms. But I suspect there will be some – and I hope I can demonstrate that I am a web designer with a deep sympathy and passion for environmental causes and can be a valuable resource for green organistations in need of a web designer.
